83 years ago, Doris Jean Currie was brought into this world by the Almighty God. Born to the union of John and Mary Francis Currie in Brownsville, TN on June 30, 1933. The same God that brought her into this world knew that her stay here on earth would come to an end on the afternoon of Friday, June 16, 2017.

The Lord saw fit to unite her with her parents; sons, Otis Jr. and Larry Lawrence; and her 12 sisters, Annie T. Currie Bond, Pearline Shaw Currie, Beatrice Currie, Virginia Currie, Hattie Currie, Maud Currie, Ruby Currie, Susie Currie Richmond, Ida Currie, Johnnie Mary Currie Campbell, Sarah Currie, Ida Marie Currie Walker; brothers, John William Currie, James E. Currie, Sylvester Currie, Frank Currie and Cecil Currie all who were called home before her. Doris was the last of 18 children and she always referred to herself the “baby” of the family.

Doris lost her mother at birth but found admiration from one of her teachers, Ms. Allen. She grew up in the house with her father, grandmother, sisters and brothers. At the age of 8, she started working in the cotton fields. She gained much notoriety for out picking her family members.

Doris attended school until the 9th grade due to her having to work full-time in the fields.

At the age of 16, Doris married Otis Lawrence, Sr. and moved to Decatur, IL in October of 1950. She gave birth to four sons: Otis Jr., Bobby, Larry and Billy.

Doris was an extremely hard worker. She dedicated 16 years to domestic work, 9 years as a laborer for General Electric and 20 years of service to Mueller Co. where she retired in 1997. Many thought she retired forever; however, she gave back to the community as a lunchroom supervisor for School District #61 until 2010.

Doris’ hobbies were cooking, cleaning and shopping. She was well known for her delicious cakes and pies.

Most importantly, she was a child of God. Sister Lawrence confessed her life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Willow Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Brownsville, TN and was an active member of the Main Street Church of the Living God where her nephew, Dr. Thomas Walker is pastor. She truly loved her First Lady, Margaret Walker. Sister Lawrence served faithfully in the Main Street Missions Department.

Doris loved children she was called “Aunt Doris” by many. She helped many parents care for their children so they could work and would often transport them to and from school.

Doris leaves to cherish her loving memories, her children: sons, Bobby and Billy Lawrence; two beautiful God sent daughters, Murray Lawrence and Suzette (Terry) Moore; 7 grandchildren, Brandon Biggs, Angel Lawrence, Dori (Will) Elmore, Bobby Todd Lawrence, Teneshia (Antonio) Clemmons, Derrick (Vernita) Moore and Kameron Glasper; special child she took under her care, Ryan Walker; special nieces, Mildred Taylor, Hilda Walker, Diane Bond, Laverna (Tim) Hess, Barbara Ann (Fenner) Bond, Laverne Smith, Clara Clark and Nannie F. Lee; sister-in-law, Beulah Currie; special friends, Margaret Guyse, Gertie Outlaw, and caretaker, Sophronia “LuLu” Pickett.

She is survived by an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, church family and many friends all who held a special place in her heart.

Doris impacted many lives as Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt Doris and Sister Lawrence. She is loved and honored on this day. We thank God for her 83 years of life.
