Elizabeth J. "Betty" Blankenship, age 80, of Ohio 61, Mount Gilead, died on Thursday morning, Feb. 22, 2007, at the Morrow County Hospital, following complications with breast cancer.

She was born on Jan. 1, 1927, in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Paul and Julia (Buckley) Lehnerd. Betty graduated from Ursuline High School in the Class of 1944, and attended the Youngstown Business College.

On Sept. 17, 1955, Betty married her loving husband of over 37 years, Fred C. Blankenship, at the St. Columba Church in Youngstown. Together they loved to travel, with some of their most memorable trips being to Hawaii and Ireland to learn more about her Irish heritage, of which she was very proud. Due to Fred's work with FTD florists, they moved from Detroit, Mich., to Mount Gilead, where she had resided since 1970. Fred preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 1992.

Betty first worked in the office for the Mount Gilead Chamber of Commerce. Next, she was the society page editor for the Morrow County Sentinel, and wrote and reported the Morrow County Report for WMVO radio. Lastly, she retired as a clerk for the Morrow County Probate Court.
An active member of the Sacred Hearts Church, Betty played the organ for over 30 years until she was unable due to her health. Also, she was the rehearsal organist for the First Presbyterian Church. For many years, she worked the polls for the Morrow County Board of Elections.

With a passion for music, Betty played the piano, organ, accordion, and the ukulele. In addition to playing the organ at the church, she loved to lead the orchestra playing the piano for the Mount Gilead Jaycees in the 1970's and more recently at the Dr. Chester Medicine Show in Chesterville.

An avid reader, Betty was interested in everything from history to fictional mystery novels. She enjoyed knitting afghans for the Christmas Bazaar at the church, and for her many friends.

With a heart of gold, Betty selflessly gave of herself and her time to anyone and everyone. Also, she was "the life of the party" and her wonderful sense of humor often shined.

Betty will be missed by her two sons, William "Bill" (Laura) Blankenship of Mount Gilead and Michael Blankenship of Cincinnati; two daughters, Mary Ann (Dean) Turner of Rome, Ga., and Julia Blankenship of Bexley; four grandchildren, Andrea Blankenship of Fairborn, Greta Blankenship of Mount Gilead and Brian and Katy Turner, both of Rome, Ga.; a sister, Paula (Thomas) McKinney of Youngstown; and a large extended family. In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by her son Donald "Fritz" Blankenship in 1987.
