Johann Christian, age 17, sailed with his family from LeHavre on the Osceola and arrived in New York on 13 Aug 1846. They settled in Wayland, New York. His parents were Georg Christian Bill and Maria Dorothea Drehmer. His siblings were Maria Catherina 20, Maria Elizabetha 19, Nicholas 13, Maria 10, Charlotte 7, Johann Conrad 5, Johann Nicholas 2, and Georg Jacob 1.

On the 1855 state census there are 2 additional members of the family; Henry W and Johann Adam. The 1900 census says Henry was born in July 1846 on the ship on the ocean coming over. It also says his mother was Maria Catherina who never married. Johann Adam's mother was Maria Dorothea.

John C and Christian J are alternate names for Johann Christian. His first wife was Barbara whose maiden name might also have been Bill. They had two children; Henry Christian and George William. She died before the 1865 census. His second wife was Anna Regina Stannarius. They had at least seven children before she died in 1876. On the 1880 census the children were split up and living with or adopted by other families. Their names were Charles, Mary Dora, Jacob, George Adam, Helen, and Twins Mary C and Anna L.
