Businessman. Major Gordon William Lillie, popularly known to the world as Pawnee Bill, was a Wild West Showman, owning a one of the largest Wild West shows in existance, right beside the 101 Ranch Wild West Show and the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. Gordon got his start in show business with a stint as a Pawnee Interpreter for the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show and by 1888 had started his own show along with his wife, May Manning Lillie. Mrs. Lillie also acted as his sharpshooter in the show. The show was a success, eventually merging with the Buffalo Bill show, after Buffalo Bill's show had fallen on hard times. Forming the Two Bills Show, which ran from 1908 to 1913, the two men enjoyed their greatest success, until the show closed in Denver in 1913. Pawnee Bill retired to his ranch in Pawnee, OK in 1913, still active in many different business ventures such as banking, real estate, oil refining, and movie production. Still a popular star later in life, his friends included big names such as Gene Autry, Will Rogers, Fred Stone, Frank Phillips, and Bob Wills. Gordon William Lillie passed away of natural causes at his beloved home on Blue Hawk Peak in Pawnee on February 3rd, 1942, just a few days shy of his 82nd birthday. He was buried at the Lillie Family Mausoleum in Highland Cemetery next to his beloved wife May and their adopted son, Gordon William Lillie, Jr., otherwise known as Billy.
