He was born October 13, 1928, in Wellington, Kansas, the son of Harley and Mildred (Shaffer) Allen. He graduated from North High School in Wichita and attended Wichita State University. Martin was a carman with Santa Fe Railroad, upon their closing in Wichita, Martin and his family were relocated to Topeka in 1968. He retired after 41 years with the railroad. Martin loved bicycling, a passion that brought many friendships including his special friends Alice and Joan. He was a member of the Kaw Valley Bike Club. On February 20, 1949, he married JoAnn Cole in Wichita, Kansas. She survives. Other survivors include their children: Denise (Wesley) Shanklin, Lufkin, TX; Teresa (Tom) Mack, Topeka and Brad (Vicki) Allen, Oskaloosa, KS; nine grandchildren: John Ireland, David (Lisa) Ireland, Melanie (Mike) Garner, Jessica Mack, Shaun (Danielle) Mack, SaraJo (Jon) Hetheriton, April (Steve) Cary, Abby Allen and Linz Allen; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; siblings: Henry (Kay) Allen, Wichita and Barbara Macy, White Bird, ID and loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Martin L. Allen, Jr.
Graveside services were held, Monday, June 12, 2017 at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Wellington.
