Max S. Horton, age 82 of Port Orange, Florida passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 in Highland Park, Illinois.
He was born in Tazewell County, and was the son of the late Ira Edward and Maude Buskill Horton, former Richlands natives. He was a 1952 graduate of Richlands High School and went on to attend the University of Virginia to earn his Bachelor’s degree. Max was foremost a dedicated and loving father and grandfather. Throughout his life, he enjoyed dancing, swimming, diving, scuba diving and traveling. He was also blessed with the ability to create beautiful pieces of woodworking. Max grew up in the Richlands area, and worked for his father at Hortons Department Store. He served his country from 1957-1963 in the U.S. Army. He later retired as Vice President of Industrial Relations for Brunswick Corporation. He was a member of Christ the King Church in Port Orange, FL and had lived the last 30 years in Florida.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Peggy Blankenship Horton and a brother, Roger Horton.
He is survived by:
His daughter Michele Kupcso and son-in-law, Mark Kupcso of Highland Park, IL
Sister, Phyllis Kent of Alexandria, VA
Brother, Jovan “Joe” Horton, of Bluefield, WV
He is also survived by the joy of his life, his granddaughter, Katie Vovolka of Tampa, FL.
A funeral service for Max S. Horton will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Phillip Horton officiating. The family will be accepting visitation from 10:00 – 11:00 am. Interment will follow the funeral service at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, VA. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
A memorial service will also be held at Christ the King Church in Port Orange, FL (Cypress Elementary School, 6100 South Williamson Blvd, Port Orange, FL) on June 25, 2017 at 11:45am.
