Hortense is the second child of seventeen born to Violet Douglass and James Henry McCracken. She grew up in the beautiful Teton Basin of Idaho.

Hortense married William Watson on July 25, 1919. They were still in Teton County on the 1920 Census. By 1930 they had moved to Nampa, Idaho. They became parents to three children: Quinton, Wayne, and Loraine.
