Dr. Emmanuel M. Gitlin, 94, of Hickory, passed away June 13, 2017, at Catawba Regional Hospice.

Born November 9, 1922 in Poland, he was the son of the late Moses H. Gitlin and Clara S. Pikman Gitlin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Ethel Barlow, Helen Edmiston Gitlin; 3 siblings: Fania Seuss, Leon Gillin and Joseph Gitlin.

Dr. Gitlin moved to Great Britain in 1934, where he completed his secondary education. He came to the United States when he was 16 and attended Columbia Bible College. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Texas Christian University and his Graduate Degrees from Duke University.

He is Professor Emeritus of Lenoir Rhyne University where he was a professor of religion from 1968 – 1990. Before coming to Lenoir Rhyne, he taught at various universities not only in the United States but also internationally.

Following retirement he did missionary work in Croatia and Poland, where his father founded the Radisti Seminary. Dr. Gitlin also served as a visiting pastor in the Hickory area and taught Sunday School and Hebrew in various churches. Dr. Gitlin had a passion for the Bible and continued his religious studies as he read and studied every day. He loved books (especially Tolstoy) and his love for languages was evident in his ability to speak a minimum of eight. Dr. Gitlin was a brilliant man who was totally devoted to the service of God. His life will remain an example for his family, students, friends and anyone who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Lidiya Dubchak of the home; daughter, Sharon Jane Gitlin of Raleigh, NC; son, David Ernest Gitlin and wife Sonja of Tallahassee, FL; step-sons: Elijah Dubchak and wife Alla of Charlotte, NC, Vladimir Dubchak and wife Alena of Hickory, NC; sister, Vera Gitlin Stoehr of Chicago, IL; grandchildren: Zachary, Rachel and Anthony; 3 great-grandchildren and 5 step-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at St. Andrews Lutheran Church with the Rev. Richard Fritz, assisted by the Rev. John Urs and Rabbi Dennis Jones. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10 – 11:00 a.m. in the church parish hall.
