Doreen McKee Stevens Ashby
May 31, 2017 an amazing reunion took place in heaven, as our kind and loving 91 year old grandmother completed her journey here on earth. Grandma was born April 6, 1926 in Holden Utah to Vorda and Nettie Hunter McKee. She was one of nine children.
Grandma was a hard worker and spent time in her youth helping at her father's store located on Holden's main street. She would often tell her granddaughters about peeling a lot of potatoes for their large family dinners, for this was one of her family jobs when she was young.
Grandma met and later married her sweetheart Weir W. Stevens on June 22, 1946. Together they were blessed with two children, Boyd W. and Vicki. In 1962 Grandpa Stevens passed away leaving Grandma behind with their two children. Across town, Garr B. Ashby had lost his loving wife as well and was raising his two children, Bruce Bishop and Karen. On September 5, 1963 they married, joining these two families, a true blessing. Together Grandma and Grandpa ran the Holden Post Office where Grandpa Ashby was the postmaster. None of us will forget stopping in there for a visit and getting a nice cold drink of water from a snow cone shaped cup or the two of them pulling up to our homes in their long red Pontiac Bonneville. Then in 1988 Grandpa Ashby too passed away.
Being with Grandma was always nice; older grandchildren remember going out back to the chicken coop to gather the eggs with her and carefully cleaning them at her copper brown kitchen sink. Washing dishes with Grandma was always fun as she would often tell us, "It's a mighty poor wiper who can't wipe what the washer missed". Grandma enjoyed Diet Coke and sharing them with family and friends. Weekday afternoons found her sitting in her favorite blue chair watching her "plays", as she called them. Grandma took good care of herself. She loved to go for walks every morning and evening with her sister, Bly. In fact the two of them were the Grand Marshals for the annual Holden Pioneer Day parade, but instead of having two elderly ladies ride in a fancy vehicle, they walked! Well into her 80's this beautiful lady would jump up into her Ford Bronco or Ford pickup truck and make her way to Fillmore where she loved getting her hair done every Friday. Grandma also made the best applesauce/chocolate chip cookies. She would make dozens of these along with yummy sugar cookies, some with pink frosting and others with just sprinkles.
She introduced many of her grandchildren to Coke in a bottle, Cookie Crisp cereal, and Manwich Sloppy Joes. Grandma will be fondly remembered for the many late nights of Yahtzee, in which she seemed to always win, along with the fabulous fish fries from her and Grandpa's ice fishing trips. Grandma always had a warm smile and hug for anyone who entered her home and always made sure her great grandchildren never left without a package or two of fruit snacks in their hand. She had a generous heart and would give freely to any charity or person in need.
Grandma was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She always served faithfully in her callings. She spent countless years serving as a compassionate service leader and was well known for her homemade rolls which she baked for numerous funerals held in Holden. She would often bring them to family gatherings as well, along with her famous lemon and banana jell-o salad. Grandma loved singing in the Holden Ward Choir and never wanted to miss even a practice. She was a member for as long as any of us can remember.
Grandma will always be remembered for her strength and perseverance. In 2007 she would suffer more loss as her son, Boyd W., was taken with cancer followed by her daughter, Vicki, in 2011 with the same disease.
Grandma was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings: Roma (Turner), Chad McKee, Bly (Nixon), Lola (Stevens), Voris (Bennett Bennion), Riley McKee, and Lex McKee, her husbands, a son and daughter, son-in-law Dean Denning, and grandsons: Bruce N. Ashby, Scott Ashby Denning, and Kevin Lee Stevens. She is survived by her stepchildren: Bruce (Joan) Ashby, Bountiful; Karen Denning, Bountiful; daughter-in-law AnnaRae Stevens, Holden; son-in-law Lee R Crosland, Ferron; sister-in-law Phyllis McKee, Holden; and brother Jan (Carol) McKee, Bountiful.
Grandma was a loving grandmother to 19 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren (with one on the way), and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Our family would like to thank Fillmore Community Medical Center extended care, Millard Care & Rehabilitation, and Intermountain Homecare & Hospice for their tender and loving care of our grandmother.
Services will be held Monday, June 5, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Holden Ward, 100 East, 100 North. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 11:30-12:30 in the Holden Ward Cultural Hall. Interment will be at the Holden Cemetery under the care of Rasmussen Mortuary.
