Politician. He was born in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol and joined the Bolshevik Party in 1915. He served as secretary of the Leningrad Communist Party beginning in 1934 following the political assassination of Sergei Kirov. In 1939 he was granted membership into the elite ruling Soviet Politburo, a position he held until his death nine years later. During the Soviet-Finnish and Second World Wars, he played a key leadership role in organizing the defense of Leningrad. Following the war he created the Communist Information Bureau as an outlet for promoting anti-imperialist propaganda and foreign policy issues. He was a close political ally and friend of Joseph Stalin, a relationship which helped shield him from the party purges of the 1930s, while helping to advance his political career throughout the Communist Party hierarchy. As Stalin's cultural commissar he enforced the doctrine of "socialist realism", which demanded glorification of the Soviet state. After World War II he imposed strict censorship on the nation's arts and shut down numerous publications accused of having liberal tendencies, while the work of many leading Soviet writers and composers (Ahkmatova, Zoschenko, Prokofiev, Shostakovich) was banned under his leadership. This oppressive policy became known as "Zhdanovism". Following his death in 1948, his home town of Mariupol was renamed Zhdanov in his honor.
