JOAN PONTIUS ELLIS, 84, of Santa Fe, Texas, passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2017, surrounded by her beloved daughter and granddaughters. Joan was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston on August 26, 1932 to father Carl E. Pontius and mother Catherine Gray. As the seventh of eight children to Irish Catholics, she was instilled with the importance of family and celebrating all occasions from a young age. Joan attended Annunciation School and graduated from Incarnate Word Academy in 1951, where she met her lifelong best friend, Jackie Mims. She met the love of her life, Johnny, at the Silver Dollar in Bandera, Texas and married him on April 11, 1953.

Shortly after they wed, Joan and Johnny welcomed a baby boy, Jon Patrick, who passed away soon after birth. This sadness was surpassed by the arrival of two daughters, Therese Ann DeArman, in 1959 and Kellie Jean Scruggs, in 1961. While they loved the proximity of family and friends at their home in Turtle Creek, Joan and Johnny decided to head to the “country” and raised their girls on 50 acres of land, known as the Double J Ranch, in Alvin. In the late 1990s, Joan bought her famous Seascape condo and returned weekly to enjoy life on Galveston Isle.

Joan listed her occupation as “Wonderful Wife and Mother” and was a Red Cross Swim Instructor and an avid beachcomber. She was a lover of all things Irish - music, culture and drink – and shared this love with her sisters and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Preston Ellis; her children, Jon Patrick and Therese Ann; and her parents Carl and Catherine Pontius.

She is survived by her daughter, Kellie Scruggs, and husband, Glen, of Santa Fe; sister, Dolores Thomas, of Pearland; and sister-in-law, Lee Ellis, of New Braunfels. She was loved by 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, who knew her as Memaw.

Joan was cared for in her final year by a team of special women, Dorothy, Robin, Jasmine, and Angela, and the family is forever grateful for their kindness and companionship.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, 2017, at Mary Queen Catholic Church, 606 Cedarwood Drive, Friendswood, Texas. A Recitation of the Rosary will be prayed at 7:00pm.

Her funeral service and mass begins at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017 at Mary Queen Catholic Church with Rev. James H. Kuczynski, M.S. officiating. A graveside service and interment will follow at South Park Resurrection Cemetery, 1310 North Main Street, Pearland, Texas.

A Celebration of Life will occur for family and friends immediately after the interment at the Knight of Columbus Hall, 2320 Hatfield Road, Pearland, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Center Houston, http://thecenterhouston.org/, in memory of Joan’s youngest sister, Peggy Pontius.

Condolences can be sent to the family in care of Jeter Funeral Home at www.jeterfuneralhome.com.
