Gary L. Ferguson passed away June 5th, 2017 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. Gary was born in Fort Worth TX and grew up in Shreveport LA, where he was a member of Ingleside Baptist Church. He graduated with honors from Fair Park High School, Class of 1971, receiving a National Merit Scholarship to LSU, and graduated Summa Cum Laude, with a degree in Classical Languages. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Library Science. A lifelong avid reader, Gary worked at the State Library of Louisiana. He retired in 2010 as head of the Reference Department.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Elizabeth Ferguson. He is survived by his wife Terre Ferguson and step children Lisa Gonzalez, Daniel Gonzalez and wife Claudia, and Sarah Gonzalez, all of Ft. Worth, TX, step grandchildren Serena and Samantha, Mitchell, Jeremiah, and Issac, all of Ft. Worth, TX, brother Alan Ferguson of Homer, LA, and stepfather Ray Pruitt of Shreveport La, niece Erin Balarin and husband Dusan of Bloomington Indiana, aunt, Joetta Belew, of Ft. Worth, TX, and a large extended family in Texas.

Gary was a faithful and loving son, brother, and adored husband, known and loved for his great intellect, moral character, and sense of humor. Gary had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and loved his job at the library, researching questions for patrons, selecting books for the library’s collection, etc. He enjoyed assisting noted local authors with research for their writings, such as Charles East, who recognized Gary’s invaluable help with research for his acclaimed Civil War novel, “The Diary of Sarah Morgan.” He also wrote “SONG FINDER”, a reference book for the State Library of Louisiana that was published and sold to libraries across the country.

Funeral services will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s research.
