James Patterson Alexander was born at Moody, Texas. He was educated in the public schools of Moody, and received his law degree from the University of Texas in 1908.

He practiced law first in McGregor, Texas, moving to Waco in 1911. His career as a lawyer, judge and teacher has been eminently distinguished and successful.

He served first as County Judge in McLennan County, and from 1931 to 1940 he was Associate Justice of the Court of Criminal Appeals at Waco. In 1940 he was elected Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas. From 1920 to 1940 he was professor of Civil Procedure in the Baylor University Law School.
