Revolutionary Figure, Politician. He was born in the town of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, son of Jewish parents. He was active in revolutionary movements in both St. Petersburg and Moscow, leading to the fall of the government of Czar Nicholas II. Following the 1917 October Revolution, he was appointed Bolshevik Party Chief in Moscow, serving in that capacity from September 7, 1918 until his assassination in September of the following year. In 1930 the town of Sergiev Posad was renamed Zagorsk in his honor.
