THOMPSON, Jack Edward, of Solana Beach, California passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 92 on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at his home.

Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. His family and friends will remember his great love for his wife of 67 years, Maria, who passed away two years ago.

He was born in Central City, Nebraska to Ray Elbert Thompson and Bessie Fay Davis and was raised in eastern Nebraska. He graduated from the Beatrice, Nebraska High School as Valedictorian in 1942. He attended Northwestern University and the Colorado School of Mines.

Later in life, he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1993. Reflecting on his appreciation of his years in college and his belief in the value of education, Jack established a scholarship fund that continues to help many students earn their degrees. Over the passage of the years, this fund has given over $2.5 million in scholarships.

After World War II, Jack worked for the Independent Exploration Co. of Houston as a seismic crew chief in Cuba. He never found any oil but he met his future bride while working there.

When the seismic team moved on he remained behind to court Maria del Carmen Larrea. They were wed on May 8, 1948 in Havana and Jack began work with Compania Rayonera de Cuba where he stayed for 13 years. Concurrent with this work for Compania Rayonera, Jack acted as a consultant for a number of Latin American capitalists on investments in mining and chemical endeavors.

Jack returned to the United States in July of 1960 (a year and a half after Castro assumed power) to work with Newmont Mining Corp. as an assistant to the President. In 1963, he was given responsibility for all new development and in 1967 was elected Vice President of Development. In 1971, he became Executive Vice President of Newmont, and in 1974, was elected President. He served in this position until 1985 when he retired from the company. He served as Vice Chairman for a year and then continued consulting until 1990.

Upon his retirement, Jack and Maria moved to Tucson, Arizona where they enjoyed life in the desert. Golf was a big part of Jack's life. As a low handicap golfer he was in constant demand as a partner in tournaments.

Jack also became involved with the Mining Foundation of the Southwest and the local American Institute of Mining Engineering.

The two travelled extensively and even did an around-the-world trip. They also organized regular family reunions in Hawaii, Park City, Utah and several cruises, which are now remembered fondly by all participants.

Jack is survived by his children, Jack (Linda), Ray (Pamela) and Robert (Susan); his grandchildren, Heather Baron (Colin), Morgan Doyle (Sean), Michael Thompson, Nicholas Thompson (Leslie), David Thompson, and Evan Thompson.

A Graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Holy Hope Cemetery.
