The last remaining child of Henry Aaron and Sarah Ophelia Hutcheson’s seventeen children has died at the age of 92. Jack Lance Hutcheson, Sr. passed away Sunday, June 11, 2017. He was born in Meeks, GA, January 26, 1925. After losing his parents, Jack moved to Vidalia to live with his sister, Mattie, and graduated from Vidalia High School in 1941. He attended Wesleyan Conservatory on scholarship until being drafted into the Army Air Corps. After being discharged, Jack returned to complete his degree in music in 1949. From there he went to Northwestern University at Evanston, IL and graduated with a masters degree in music in 1950. He earned his PhD degree in music from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL in 1970.

Jack’s first teaching job was at South Georgia College at Douglas, GA followed by a stint of teaching in South Broward, FL from 1956 – 1967. He began teaching at Macon Junior College (Middle Georgia State University) in 1970, retiring in December 1987 as Professor Emeritus of Music.

In retirement, Jack continued to teach private voice lessons, enjoyed tending his yard, spending time at his mountain home, sharing stories with friends in the community, and playing cards. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Jack, also known as Papa, is survived by his loving wife Betty, his two children, Jack, Jr. (Audrey) and Myra; four grandchildren, Jack, III, Holly, April (Dustin), and Ethan (Katelyn); one great-grandchild, Jason; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and relatives 5:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at the Hutcheson residence in Macon. A private interment will be held at a later date in Cairo, GA.
