Together again, Kenneth P. Abbey Jr.90 years of Walbridge, Ohio, joined his late wife, Lola, on Sunday, June 11, 2017. They can continue, for eternity, their love for each other and dancing to the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Ken was born on February 13, 1927 to Josephine (Finch) and Kenneth Paul Abbey. The oldest of 8, he needed to forgo his education at a young age when his father was killed in a Civil Aeronautical plane accident. He started driving truck while in high school and continued for many years as an over the road driver for companies such as Yellow Transit, Norwalk, and Interstate. He attended Scott High School in the early 40’s, playing football prior to completing his sophomore year. Volunteering for the US Army in 1945, Ken served 2 years, stateside, in the Parachute Infantry.
After an honorable discharge as a corporal, he returned to Toledo and met his future bride, Lola Margaret Bauer. United in holy matrimony on October 21, 1948, at St. Stephen’s church in Birmingham, Ken & Lola went on to be lifetime members, including baptism, 1st communion and confirmation of all their children. Outside of work, athletics and family defined Ken. After a few years of marriage and a couple of children (eventually 7), they moved to their long term home in Walbridge, OH. Ken was still pursuing opportunities to play football with various semiprofessional teams, finishing his career at the age of 36 with the Toledo Tornadoes. Other athletic involvement included officiating Toledo area high school football and playing on various local softball teams. Ken greatly enjoyed watching the Abbey children and grandchildren participate in Lake Local Schools athletics, over the past 50 years. After retirement, he coached youth football at Lake, fondly called ‘Coach Grandpa’. Ken enjoyed rooting for the Detroit Tigers and whoever was beating the Cleveland Indians .Supporting his wife and children by working long hours, he was proud to install an in ground pool at the home in the early 1970’s. This became THE family gathering place for the next 40 years including the annual Abbey Hunky Turkey party. Ken & Lola had many happy trips to Pompano Beach, Florida and Lake Havasu, Arizona
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Nicholas, great grandson, Garrett Arvan, brothers: Jim, Bob, Kit, sisters: Evelyn Kanavel, Darlene Coombs, Bonnie Larson, Geraldine (Geri) Cappelletty.
