He was the only son of William Sherman and Estella May (Easter) Arnold. His widowed grandmother Calista Corbett Easter lived with them in 1910 census in McKenzie, Burleigh County, North Dakota where his father farmed before moving back to Iowa. In 1920 they were in Ames. He had four sisters: Fay F., and Mrs. A. H. League of Perry and Mrs. Glen Morris of Atlantic.

On 18th of July 1920 in Boone, he married Wilma Smith. He was a carpenter in the building trade in Ames where they owned their home. His parents lived with them until their passing.

1. Sherman Benjamin Arnold, Jr, born Dec. 3, 1925
2. Stanley Merlan Arnold, born July 22, 1928 in Ames.
