Ninety Six SC - Barbara Perkins Beagen, 65, resident of 228 Compass Point, wife of Lawrence F. "Larry Beagen, died May 23, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center. Born in Detroit MI, April 30, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Coy and Dorothy Ann Dalton Perkins. She received her B.A. degree from Marygrove College, Detroit, MI in 1961 where she majored in both art and education. In 1986, she received her master�(TM)s degree in education from the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Beagen taught 1st grade art in Detroit from 1961 to 1964 and later taught 1st grade in Troy, MI from 1975 to1980. She taught 1st grade at Merry wood Elementary School in Greenwood from 1981 until her retirement in 1996. A member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Greenwood, she was also a member of the National Education Association and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. For school year 1985-86, Mrs. Beagen was honored as Teacher of the Year for Merrywood Elementary School. In December 1997, she was recognized by The United Way as Volunteer of the Month for her outstanding service to the Greenwood Literacy Council where she served as a volunteer tutor to the Adult Literacy Council. Mrs. Beagen also served Guardian Ad Liten for children of Greenwood County and served as coordinator of the Spanish Summer School Project in 1980. Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are a daughter, Coleen Beagen and husband, Paul Griffith of New York City; three sons, Michael Beagen of Greenwood, Brian and wife, Tammy Beagen of Columbia and Patrick and wife, Kathryn Beagen of Spartanburg; sisters, Donna Marie and husband, Robert Parcha of Livonia, MI, Mary Gayle and husband, Philip Zimmerman of Novi, MI; brothers, Gerald Thomas and wife, Clara Perkins, James Dalton and wife, Lisa Perkins of Traverse City, MI and Mark David Perkins and wife, Claire Weipert of Centennial, CO; three grandchildren, Lawrence B. Beagen, Francis S. Beagen and Riley D. Griffith. Mrs. Beagen was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Ann Viscosi. A Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Burial in Oakbrook Memorial Park. Blyth Funeral Home.
