The daughter of a police chief from Bossier City, Louisiana, young Billy Jean was already divorced from first husband, Harrison Eshliman when she was introduced to Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 – January 1, 1953) by her then boyfriend, country singer Faron Young (February 25, 1932 – December 10, 1996).

In October 1952 at age 19 Billie Jean Jones married Hank Williams. Williams died just two months after they were married. Actually, they "married" three times--first in a private ceremony in northern Louisiana and then in two huge public weddings at the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans witnessed by 28,000 paying "guests."

After Hank's death, Billie Jean started performing as Mrs. Hank Williams. She gave up show business a year later when she married Johnny Horton in September, 1953.
"Johnny was a beautiful person," she recalled. "We hunted and fished together and after we married, I quit the road. I just wanted a home and a family
She got both. She and Horton had two daughters, Melody and Yanina. Horton also became a good father for Jeri Lynn, Billie Jean's daughter from her first marriage.

Johnny Horton's Death:
On the night of November 4–5, 1960, Horton and two other band members, Tommy Tomlinson and Tillman Franks, were driving from Austin, Texas to Shreveport when they collided with an oncoming truck on a bridge near Milano in Milam County, Texas. Horton died en route to hospital, and Tomlinson was seriously injured; his leg later had to be amputated. Franks suffered head injuries, and James Davis, the driver of the truck, had a broken ankle and other minor injuries.
The funeral was held in Shreveport on November 8, 1960, officiated by Tillman Franks' younger brother, William Derrel "Billy" Franks (1920-2006), a Church of God minister. Johnny Cash did one of the readings, choosing Chapter 20 from the Book of John.

Later Billie Jean married and divorced a fourth husband, insurance executive Kent Berlin.

Billie Jean Horton is portrayed by actress Maddie Hasson in the 2015 biopic film about Hank Williams' life titled I Saw the Light.
