Robert E. Brunson, 85, passed away from complications of Parkinson’s Disease at Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana on Saturday June 10, 2017 at2:05 P.M.. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Bob was born on April 11, 1932 in Olney, Illinois to Hubert and Gertrude Brunson. He grew up in Lukin Township, where he attended a one-room school. He graduated from Lawrenceville High School in Lawrenceville, IL. After high school, he joined the Navy where he received the Honor Man Award. After his stint with the Navy, he enrolled at the University of Illinois. He graduated with honors with a B.S. in Accountancy.

After graduating in 1958, he was on the staff at Arthur Anderson & Co. in the Chicago office until 1963 when he decided he wanted to work in a smaller world so moved to Champaign to work at Winakor & Myers. He became a partner in 1967 and the name was changed to Winakor, Bates and Brunson in 1971.

In 1982, the firm merged with McGladrey & Pullen. His public accounting experience included partner in charge of audits, income tax planning and return preparation, business consulting and management and supervising and training personnel. After retiring from McGladrey & Pullen, he joined The Atkins Group as their in-house accountant.

Bob’s involvement with charitable and professional organizations were: Illinois CPA Society, member and chairperson of the Savings and Loan Committee and member of Chapter Operations Committee; Eastern Chapter of Illinois CPA Society treasurer, vice-chairperson and chairperson; American Cancer Society, Champaign County Unit treasurer; First Presbyterian Church of Champaign Elder, Trustee, and Treasurer; Community Day Care Center Board of Directors; Champaign Country Club Board of Directors and treasurer; and Champaign County Public Health District treasurer.

Bob’s enjoyment in life was making up golf games for Saturday morning golf at Champaign Country Club, playing bridge with fellow bridge friends on Friday late afternoons and playing bridge at Ginger Creek and being an avid fan and spectator of University of Illinois sports and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bob married Martha Jean Keen on September 7, 1957. She survives. Also surviving are sons Jeffrey (Liz) Brunson and Philip (Tina) Brunson, both of Champaign, and daughter Jo Ellen (Jason) Skwarcan of Fishers, IN, six grandchildren, Andrew, Riley, Nicholas, Noah, and Emma Brunson and Parker Skwarcan.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and grandson Connor Skwarcan.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Bob with memorial donations to the First Presbyterian Church of Champaign or the American Parkinson’s Disease Association.
