Robert was a former resident of Wellsville, having worked at Worthington and Ingersoll Rand as a quality control manager. He attended St. Peter and Paul Elementary in Kenmore and Portville High School and graduated from Wellsville High School. He attended St. Bonaventure, graduated and served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
He loved football and was active and coached in the Wellsville Little League program.
He is survived by a son, Brian (Melissa) Fortner; grandchildren, Cole and Ainslee Fortner of Penn Laird, Va.; a brother, Joseph B. (MaryJo) Fortner of Fairport; sisters, Jeanne M. (George)Zenger of Williamsville, and Therese (Wayne) Gary of Wellsville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a son, Mark Fortner; and brother and sister-in-law, Thomas F. and Joy D. Fortner.
A memorial Mass will take place in the spring. A notice will follow. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wellsville. Memorials may be made to the SPCA Serving Allegany County, the David A. Howe Public Library or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
