William R. Clark is well known for being the first Confederate Soldier killed in Baltimore during the Civil War. He was a Baltimorean who had enlisted only days before the bloody Pratt Street Riot and had yet to muster in.

Many Baltimoreans were wounded, and 12 were killed – James Carr, William R. Clark, Robert W. Davis, Sebastian Gill, Patrick Griffiths, John McCann, John McMahon, Francis Maloney, William Maloney, Philip S. Miles, Michael Murphy, and William Reid.

Prior to enlisting, he served Baltimore City as a Firefighter.
