Johnnie Mae Ray, 74, was called home to rest from her labor on Sunday evening, June 4, 2017, at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, Columbia. Born on Jan. 8, 1943, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Morris and Maggie Jefferson Mickens.

She joined Mt. Olive AME Church and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age.

Upon leaving South Carolina, she moved to Newark, New Jersey, where she joined St. Luke AME Church, Newark, and became a loyal and faithful member. She was married to Freddie "Sonny Boy" Ray of Newark.

She leaves to cherish her memories: five children, Dorothy Jenkins of Dalzell, Stanley (Toni) Mickens of El Paso, Texas, Mary Taylor, Barbara Mickens and Shawn Ray of Newark; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Victoria (Henry) Jenkins of Dalzell, Emma Line Mickens and Annie McMillian of Sumter and Mary Gass of Newark; four brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Celebration of Life services: Mt. Olive AME Church, 2738 Woodrow Road, Woodrow, with the Rev. Dr. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor, eulogist.

Burial: Mt. Olive Memorial Garden.

These services have been entrusted to the management and staff of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter.
