University of Alaska Anchorage student Tyler Cameron White, 30, was found Dec. 6, 2003, at a residence in Anchorage. He died quietly in his sleep.

A celebration of his life will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Central Lutheran Church, 1420 Cordova St.

Mr. White was born April 17, 1973, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the second son of Lt. Col. Kenneth White and Jeanette Kelley White Menaker.

His family wrote: "Tyler was a gifted athlete in judo, soccer, swimming and baseball. At age 6, he won state honors in judo and later earned a black belt. His competitive spirit and many talents made him a standout in everything from old-time fiddle contests as a young teenager to high school band and academic competitions. He participated in Academic Decathlon and Odyssey of the Mind in Texas. Tyler graduated from Judson High School in May 1991, 23rd in a class of 850, and a National Merit Scholar.

"In 1992, Tyler and family moved to Alaska. He enrolled in the University of Alaska Juneau, where he majored in math and embraced the beauty and athletic opportunities of Alaska. He kayaked, hiked and photographed the Juneau area before a serious illness forced him to take time off to recuperate. He returned to his academic pursuits at UAA and doubled his degree, adding computer technology. He worked for the UAA computer department as well as other jobs.

"Tyler was an avid hockey player and volunteer coach. He and his fiancee, Kathryn Ireland, played co-ed hockey when they were not involved with the Alaska Children's Choir and other activities.

"Tyler will be remembered by his friends and family for his exuberant love of life and for the joy he found in learning and discovering new people and experiences."

He is survived by his fiancee, Kathryn Ireland, and her parents, Glennis and Roy Ireland of Eagle River; brothers, Trevor White of Fairbanks and Trenton White of Juneau; stepsisters and stepbrother, Natasha Thompson, Kate Menaker and David Menaker of Anchorage; parents, David and Jeanie Menaker of Haines; father, Kenneth White of Harmon, W.V.; and grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Donations in his name may be made to youth musical groups or seizure disorder research organizations.
