Joseph "Joe" Powell Sr., 84, of the 1200 block of Darren Drive, died June 14, 1998, at Maryview Medical Center.

Born in Southampton County, Va., he was a retired mechanic from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 31 years of service. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Drewryville, Va., and was an ordained minister.

Survivors include six daughters, Anna Sellers of New York, Lillian Moore of New Jersey, Barbara Wilson, Bettie Douglas, Rosalind Powell, all of Portsmouth, and Julia Mills of Chesapeake; two sons, Joseph H. Powell Jr. and Rodney Powell, both of Portsmouth; a stepson, Bruce Bell of Portsmouth; two sisters, Geneva M. Brown of New York and Roberta Lucille Griffin of Portsmouth; two brothers, Thomas O. Powell Sr. of Portsmouth and Calvin L. Powell of New Jersey; four sons-in-law, Calvin Wilson, Charles Douglas, Calvin Mills, and David Moore; two daughters-in-law, Mary Powell and Natoria Powell; a dear friend, Annie Artis, and two special people, Jovon N. Artis and Courtney Edney; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Anna F. Hobbs Powell and Joseph N. Powell.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at New Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Plain Baptist Church cemetery. Viewing will begin today from 10 am. to 6 p.m. Family and friends will assemble at 10:15 a.m. for the processional to the church. Serenity Funeral Home is in charge.
