Works AJS motorcycle racer. Born in Warrington, Cheshire, during the last three months of 1902. Jack William (Billy) Hollowell raced motorcycles on the Isle of Man four times, failing to finish three times and finishing 12th in the 1921 Senior TT on a Norton. By 1923 he was one of ten AJS works riders who raced at the TT but he retired from both the Junior (350cc) and Senior (500cc) events. In 1925 he rejoined the AJS works team, and in fact he became engaged to the boss's (A.J.Stevens) daughter Millie. His team mates were Hanford Stevens, (the boss's son), Frank Longman and Jimmy Simpson. Hollowell came second in the French GP at Montlhery. A month later the Belgian GP was held at the daunting Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Unusually all the engine classes would race at the same time but each class would cover a different number of laps. Hollowell was riding his 350cc AJS and leading his class, when on the 5th lap, he collided with another rider approaching the Lefosse Bridge. He was thrown from his motorcycle and missed all of the roadside trees, but his head struck an iron gate post and he was killed. A few days later a convoy of dignitaries arrived and escorted his body to Spa railway station where a number of moving speeches were given. His flower bedecked coffin was the conveyed by train back to England. The following year, an impressive monument to the crash was erected at the site but this fell into disrepair. In fact it later collapsed into a stream. In the 1970s the monument was rescued by the curator of the Musee de Circuit and in 2005 was replaced in the centre of Francorchamps.
