The son of Norman Francis Charles Strauss and Claire Louise Wilhelm, "Dave" was a history teacher at Cleveland High School in St. Louis, Missouri for many years. He later taught at Cleveland NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps).

He hosted shows on radio for close to 30 years, dazzling listeners with his amazing knowledge of historical and popular trivia. Callers would try to stump him on questions ranging from the arts and entertainment to sports to world events. Others would call-in to ask for information they couldn't remember in the days before Google and the Internet.

Known to listeners as "Mr. Trivia," Dave began hosting his show in 1978 on the 50,000 watt mega-station KMOX-AM 1120, based in St. Louis. The station's signal was so strong that nighttime broadcasts of his trivia program could be picked up as far away as Mexico and Canada. He co-hosted the show for a time with Art Fleming of Jeopardy fame.

In 1996, Dave moved his Mr. Trivia show to WIBV-AM 1260. He switched to KTRS-AM 550 the following year and remained there until 2006. On top of his radio appearances, he was a regular host of local trivia contests.

An article published on page A2 of the 10 Jun 2017 edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch quoted a fellow KMOX radio host as describing Dave as "the smartest guy I ever met." His former colleague went on to say, "His brain captured everything and he forgot nothing. He knew more about Hollywood movies than the people in Hollywood."

Dave died at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis following a long illness. At the time of his death, he was 67 years, 9 months and 14 days old.

He was survived by 1 sister; 1 brother; 1 nephew; 3 nieces; many extended family members; and a large number of friends, former students and fans.

In addition to his mother and father, Dave was preceded in death by 1 sister-in-law, Judith Strauss. He never married.

Visitation was held from 3 to 9 p.m. on 13 Jun 2017 at Kutis Funeral Home on Gravois Road in Affton, Missouri. Funeral services were conducted at Kutis Affton Chapel at 11 a.m. the following morning.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Leukemia Society or to Backstoppers.

Children: None.
