DAVENPORT -- Services for Maurice J. "M.J." Slattery, a resident of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation is 3-6 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, with a prayer service offered there at 3 p.m.

Mr. Slattery died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, after an extended illness. He retired in 1970 as a machinist after 30 years at Rock Island Arsenal.

Maurice James Slattery was born Nov. 4, 1910, in Dunnebecke, S.D., to James P. and Margaret (Streigel) Slattery.

He married Gertrude M. Klein on April 25, 1934, in Moberly, Mo. She died March 12, 1994.

Maurice graduated from St. Elizabeth High School, Harper, Iowa, and attended the former Iowa State Teachers College, most recently University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. He had been a basketball coach at St. Elizabeth during his college years. He enjoyed sports and had participated in baseball while in college. He also coached youth baseball in the West End and had been active in Little League and Pony League baseball in earlier years. M.J. enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening. He was an enthusiast of Western Literature and films. He was a charter member of the Quad-City Barber Shop Quartet Association, and in earlier years, he played drums in several bands in the Harper area. While attending college, he was a very proud member of the Mini-Singers Male Chorus. He was a past president of the Machinist Union Local 81 and a longtime union trustee and steward at Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials can be made to the church or Holy Trinity Mission School.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen and Jim Schebler and Sharen and Marvin Wyatt, and a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Sue Slattery, all of Davenport; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and sisters, Wilma O'Brien, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Mary (Mrs. Jim) Seward, Davenport. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Leonard, John and Duane.
