Mr. Markegard died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at Community Memorial Hospital, Redfield.
Dale Cecil Markegard was born Dec. 30, 1927, near Brandt to Clarence and Lois (Asher) Markegard. He attended several rural schools and worked as a farmhand before being employed at the Homestake Mining Company in Lead. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953.
He married Phyllis Hansen in Orient Dec. 11, 1951. He spent several years working on road construction, was employed at the Orient Farmers Union, and managed Jay's Station in Redfield. He operated his own salvage operation until illness forced his retirement.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, attending auctions, playing the slots and spending time with his family.
He was a member of Roland Eggar American Legion Post, Orient, Clay Kiser American Legion Post No. 92 in Redfield, the Orient Lutheran Church, where he served on the church board, and Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife: Phyllis, Redfield; two sons: Roger (Edith Christman) Markegard, Redfield, and Bruce Markegard, Watertown; two daughters: Donna (Dennis Brinson) Brownell, Trent, and Janice (Howard) Rounds, Iroquois; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; three brothers: Iner, Phelan, Calif., Dwaine, Argo, Idaho, and Lyle "Bud," Faribault, Minn.; three sisters: Vera Redlin, Eudora, Kan., Mavis Frauline, Vancouver, Wash., and Joyce (Edward) Vysocky, San Bernardino, Calif.; sisters-in-law: Marlys Markegard, Vancouver, Wash., Mimi Markegard, Phelan, Calif., Shirley Markegard, Canby, Minn., and JoAnn Behn, Blackfoot, Idaho; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Lyle, Warren and Harlan, one brother-in-law: Eugene Redlin, and two nephews Steve Vysocky and Rob Markegard.
