Joe Ben Hollaway died Sept. 15 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He was 70.

Born in Cade, Okla., to James and Lena Hollaway, he was raised in Vernon, Texas, with his seven siblings. His family moved to Jamestown in 1954 and he joined the U.S. Navy in 1957. He served on the USS Bon Humme Richard from 1957 to 1960 and traveled to San Francisco, San Diego, Japan, the Philippines and China.

He met his future wife, Elvera Constance Coscarelli, and they settled in Cupertino and starting a family. They moved to Modesto in 1969.

He worked for Save Mart Supermarkets in the print shop for 20 years.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cutting wood, barbecuing for his friends and family, reading and was an avid 49er and Giants fan.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elvera Hollaway of Modesto; children, Laura Hollaway, of San Jose, Leanna Zumwalt, of Chugiak, Alaska, Rocky Hollaway, of Modesto, Joe and wife Cynthia Hollaway, of Oakdale, and Lisa and husband Russell Bridgers, of Modesto; siblings, James and wife Virginia Hollaway, of Waverly, Va., and Velma Hogg, of San Manuel, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lena Hollaway; brothers, Seaborn William and Arthur Dean Hollaway; and sisters, June Hollaway, Zula White, Evalena Armes and Sally "Thelma" Holderman.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Oct. 2 at the Big Valley Grace Church, 4040 Tully Road, Modesto, to be followed by a celebration of life at the Hollaway residence.
