Dave was a native of McDowell County and was the son of the late J. D. and Nancy (Fleming) Blanton. Surviving is his wife, Virginia Staples Blanton of Marion; sisters, Mrs. Nancy Nahikian of Raleigh, NC, Ms. Emily Blanton and Ms. Josephine Blanton, of Marion, NC. Sister: Ms. Josephine Blanton. Dave was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marion where he served as a trustee, deacon and president of his Sunday school class. He served on the board of directors of McDowell Savings and Loan, now known as Asheville Federal Savings and Loan. As president of the Chamber of Commerce, Dave helped in bringing Collins & Aikman, Air-Preheater and other new business to the county. He was appointed to the North Carolina Conservation and Development Board by Governor Dan K. Moore. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Meredith College. He was a retired merchant and real estate manager. Dave spent his earliest years at the family residence in Greenlee and attended school in Marion. He played on the first football team of Marion High School in 1920. He was a 1928 graduate of the University of North Carolina where he was also a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, serving as commander of the Psi chapter for two years. He was a member of the Gorgon's Head and Alpha Kappa Psi, a business fraternity.

Virginia was born to the late Rev. Raymond Fowler Staples and Mary Elizabeth (Waff) Staples in Orange, Va., where her father was pastor of First Baptist Church. Virginia was educated at Lucy Cobb Institute, a private high school in Athens, Ga., Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., and Meredith College in Raleigh where she graduated in 1935 with an Arts major. In recent years, she helped start the McDowell Arts and Crafts Association and was the first Visual Arts director. She was also a member of the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League, where she studied art under Joseph Vandermeer and later John Brady and others who taught art in Marion. She won several blue ribbons for her oil portraits and watercolor paintings. Virginia was also a member of Edward Buncombe DAR in Asheville and Unaka Charter, DAC in Asheville. She married Charles David Blanton of Marion on March 29, 1942, who passed away in January of 2000. Her brother, Raymond F. Staples, also preceded her in death. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Marion. Surviving are two nieces, Dottie Poulos of Oakton, Va., and Sarah Jo Rountree of Raleigh and a sister-in-law, Emily T. Blanton of Marion.
