Allen, Marion
October 9, 1908 - February 4, 2007

MILTON— Marion Allen, 98, of Milton, WI, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at her home. She was born on Oct. 9, 1908, in Athens, Georgia, the daughter of the late Walter Rylander and Lucy Leah (West) Mathis. Marion was educated in private schools during her early and adolescent years, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1932 with a degree in Education and Psychology. She taught a few years of elementary school and followed with further graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin. The marriage of Marion Mathis and Harris Gibbs Allen of Madison, WI took place on Dec. 18, 1937, in Athens, Georgia. Their early marriage years were spent in Madison; however, in 1953 the Town of Milton and Milton Junction claimed them as its own and they then happily made it their permanent home along with their daughter, Leah. During her lifetime she took active parts in many organizations and received warm acclaim and recognition for her genuine interest and Philanthropic participation. In 1992 her home town of Milton honored her as the Citizen of the Year and her neighboring town of Janesville followed as their YWCA presented to her their award; The Woman of Distinction. It was in 1918, when at the age of ten she volunteered as a "Red Crosser", rolling bandages and knitting squares of yarn that were to be made into "Belgian Blankets" for shipment to the war countries of Europe. At the National Convention of American Red Cross, in the year 2000, she proudly accepted the title of the oldest volunteer, still active in the country. She leaves as a gift to her hometown of Milton an activity home for senior citizens, warmly known as "The Gathering Place", built and established in 1991. She belonged to many organizations; some that are listed are Milton United Methodist Church, Milton and Rock County Historical Societies, Wisconsin Trust for Historical Preservation, Colonial Dames, Junior League, Janesville Country Club and Madison Club, Madison. She is survived by a grandson, David Allen Casarotto of Salt Lake City; a half-brother, Morgan Roby Redwine of Athens; and many nieces, nephews and cousins who will mourn the passing of their "Aunt GiGi". She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harris Gibbs Allen; her daughter, Leah; her brother, Henry Edward Mathis; and 2 nephews, John and Grady Day Mathis. Private family services will be held Friday, Feb. 9, 2007. Burial will be in the Milton Junction Cemetery. Friends are invited to meet at THE GATHERING PLACE , 715 Campus Dr., Milton, on Friday from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. for a light lunch and fellowship, remembering happy days of the past together.
