Obituary.....
Rev. Connie Mack Bowers, 87, of Air Line School Road in Bowersville, beloved husband, father, and grandfather entered his eternal home on Thursday, June 8, 2017, after a courageous battle with lymphoma. He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Stewart Vandiver Bowers and was married to his childhood sweetheart, Martha Claire Vassar, for 65 years.
He graduated from Hartwell High School, the University of Georgia, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. He was an ordained Minister, pastored churches in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia, and served with the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board in Nigeria, West Africa, for 21 years.
He was baptized, married, ordained, and a long-time member of the Cross Roads Baptist Church.
During his life, he received many awards including the DAR Best Citizen Award and The Rotary Club Four Way Test Award. He was made Pastor Emeritus by the Mine City Baptist Church in Ducktown, Tennessee, and the Second Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was recently honored by the Orita Mefa Baptist Church of Ibadan, Nigeria when they sent their current pastor to Georgia to present Connie Mack and Martha a plaque and tickets for a visit back to Nigeria. While these honors were appreciated, his goal in life was to be a servant for Christ. He always treated people with love, respect, and dignity---whether they were wealthy and powerful or the poorest of the poor. He worked diligently for racial harmony and justice.
He was a member and past president of Habitat for Humanity. He also served on the boards of Nancy Hart Literacy Council, Hart County Historical Society, Hart Interfaith Ministry, and H.E.A.R.T. He was predeceased by his parents and four siblings: Harold Bowers, Mary Stewart Gurley Moorhead, Bobby Jo Mouchet, and Jack Bowers. He was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Martha Caroline Lassiter.
After returning from Nigeria, Connie Mack worked diligently in the Hart County Community and had a cherished relationship with Union Hill Baptist Church in Bowersville. His hobbies were growing vegetables to give away, sports, visiting shut-ins, and playing with his grandchildren.
