Wiley is the 7th of 15 children born to Caleb Jones Shafer and Eppy Frances [Wimberly] Shafer. I am told he was a shift boss employed by Phelps Dodge (a copper mining company) in Bisbee, Arizona. He was working in the mine and being raised on a lift loaded with steel or iron rods, when the load shifted and he was pierced with these rods. He was taken to California for medical treatment where he died of injuries received in this accident. According to his death certificate, cause of death was: "fracture of vertebrae (cave in at mine)" Duration: 18 months. He lived in California 1 year, 1 month before his death and had lived in Long Beach for 3 months at the time of his death. He and Laura had one son, Wily Henry b. 7 May 1916 in Bisbee, Arizona.
