Norma was born April 21, 1920, in Solsville, Madison County, New York, to Ralph Arthur Farrow Sr. and Beulah Lillian Young. She came west at the age of six months and lived most of her life in Eastern and Central Oregon. She spent her childhood in Eastern Oregon on the Umatilla Indian Reservation and attended high schools in Pendleton and Adams before graduating from Long Creek High School in 1938. As a young woman, she played the saxophone and spent many Saturday nights playing in Farrow’s Orchestra for dances.
Norma met Harry “June” Arthur Welch in Long Creek and they married in Pendleton on October 21, 1938. June and Norma purchased their first ranch in Long Creek in 1945. They continued to ranch for over 30 years. They moved 18 miles east of Prineville, Oregon, at the foot of the Ochocos in 1952 and later purchased a ranch in Powell Butte, Oregon. Summers on the ranches were busy with haying, cattle, county fairs, and rodeos. They retired from ranching in 1971 but continued to live in Powell Butte.
Norma enjoyed working as the school secretary at Powell Butte Grade School for over 25 years. She retired in 1985 and continued to work as a substitute secretary at the school and the Crook County School District administration office.
Norma was a gracious hostess and liked bringing family and friends together for birthdays, holidays, and summer BBQs, with her specialty dessert being huckleberry pie. Norma played golf and bridge, read, played Scrabble, worked crossword puzzles, and followed the Blazers into her nineties. She never passed up a chance to play the nickel slots and, during her last months, looked forward each week to counting her scratch-off winnings with her grandson.
Norma and June enjoyed socializing and took frequent trips to Palm Desert and Lake Havasu to spend time with friends. They traveled throughout the Northwest and took special trips to Alaska, Hawaii, New York, Mexico, and Washington, DC.
Norma was a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Prineville, Central Oregon Senior Women’s Golf Association, and the Prineville Golf and Country Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 63 years, Harry “June” Welch; her brother, Ralph “Jay” Farrow; and her grandson, Jeffrey Richard Krebs. She is survived by daughters Rita Krebs (Richard), Lucinda Welch (Dennis Nolan), and Jill Hedges (Tony); grandsons Matt Krebs (Dana) and Taylor Hedges; and great-grandchildren Grayson, Kellen, and Karsten Krebs.
