Statesman, 5th Constitutional President of the Republic of Ecuador. He served from 13 July 1852 to 16 October 1856. Prior to becoming president he was in the navy. Quickly advancing through military ranks, he became aide-de-camp to President Juan José Flores. In 1839 he was elected governor of the province of Manabí. In 1845 he was appointed chief of the general staff and in 1849 Congressman for the province of Guayas and President of the Chamber of Deputies. In 1850 he led a revolt that deposed the sitting president and he was then elected as supreme head of the Republic and president. He is best remembered for abolishing slavery, finalizing an agreement on the country's foreign debt with Great Britain was made. Freedom of the press was honored. He improved education and elevated the status of the poor by reducing taxes. After leaving the presidency, he became a powerful influence in the Francisco Robles administration that fell after a Peruvian invasion in 1859. He went into exile in Peru and did not return to Ecuador until 1876. By then, his influence was gone.
