Carlis Otto Dunford, 76, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2005, in Williamsburg, Va. He was born in Yukon, W.Va., and was a 33 year resident of Hampton, then moving to Lanexa after his retirement for the past 15 years. Carlis was a Purple Heart recipient and veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy. He worked for the Newport News Shipyard and was a member of the Steelworkers Union from where he retired in 1990 with 33 years of service. He was a member at Faith Baptist Church in Williamsburg, and a former member and trustee of Victory Baptist Church of Hampton. Carlis was also a leader of AWANA club for boys and girls.
Preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Mamie Dunford, a sister Dorothy Dunford, and stepson, Wayne Pendry, he is survived by his wife, Hazel J. Dunford; daughters, Rita May and husband, Martin, of Baltimore, Md., Sherry D. Doiron and her husband, John, of Toana; stepson, Parker Pendry of West Virginia; six brothers, Fred Dunford of Newport News, Luther Dunford of Hampton, Bob Dunford of Bluefield, W.Va., David Dunford of Tazewell, Jim Dunford of West Virginia, and Anthony Dunford of Georgia; sisters, Stella "Louise" Dye of Tazewell, Christine Hagerman of West Virginia, Carol Lacks of Hampton, and Peg Woodward of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
A life celebration service will be conducted by Dr. Michael R. Privett at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home Chapel. The burial will immediately to follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton.
