Biography

This son of Major William Hempstone (1760) and Susanna Trail was found in the 1850 census for the Jefferson District of Frederick County, Maryland, born c. 1814 in Maryland, with a wife Harriet B., also in Maryland.

Married January 15, 1848 in Frederick County, Maryland to Harriet B. Luckett, born May 10, 1821, died January 2, 1881; buried with her husband at Monocacy Cemetery.

Armistead owned $4,100 in personal property, which was principally his slave ownership, being listed as owning six ranging in age from 1 year to 26 years of age.

Armistead was also listed as the owner of 95 acres of improved land and 110 acres unimproved, the total value being $4,100. He owned 4 horses, milch cows, 8 other cattle, and 15 swine. In the previous twelve months, he raised 350 bushels of wheat, 250 bushels of Indian corn, 20 bushels of peas and beans, 2 bushels of barley, and 100 pounds of butter.
