She was the only child of Everett Vinson Peterson and Frances Rice Peterson. Her father was killed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, and her mother died two years later from complications of surgery. Carolyn was raised as the daughter of Charles and Mary Rice Braselton in Fort Worth. In 1962 she graduated from Paschal High School where she was a member of the Musagetes. Carolyn's college years were spent in Austin at the University of Texas. She pledged Pi Beta Phi and served as Treasurer and Vice-President of her sorority. During her college days, she made her debut at the Steeplechase Club in Fort Worth. She met her husband Peyton her junior year and moved to Dallas to be with him following her graduation in 1966. In Dallas she taught English at Thomas Jefferson High School and was later certified as an academic language therapist to work with dyslexic students. Carolyn and Peyton's shared lifelong interest was The University of Texas. Carolyn served as Chairman of the Longhorn Associates Advisory Council for Women's Athletics and the Liberal Arts Advisory Council. She was a member of the Commission of 125, the Longhorn Foundation Advisory Council, and the Development Board. She was also on the Executive Committee of the Chancellor's Council. Carolyn's other interests were making Quilts of Valor, gardening, needlepoint, reading and several generations of cats. She was a member of the Junior League of Dallas and the Dallas Woman's Club.

Carolyn is survived by her husband of 48 years, sisters Mary Dudley Gomila of Fort Worth, Linda Clarke and husband Carl of Fort Worth, nephews Fritz Gomila and wife Gwathmey, Charles Gomila of New Orleans, Cliff Clarke and wife Hillary of Fort Worth, and their children.
