He joined the Navy in 1951 and was discharged in 1953. Bud attended Bemidji State University for 2 years and finished at the University of Minnesota with a degree in wildlife management. Bud spent some time working in North Dakota. He moved to Oregon in 1967 until his retirement in 1990 when he moved back to the Adams Land and lived many years with his family and friends.
