Sergeant Acri and other officers responded to a domestic call for a man threatening a woman with a knife. Upon their arrival the female was placed under arrest for destruction of property. Sergeant Acri was talking to the male when they suddenly became involved in a struggle. The male grabbed Sergeant Acri's revolver and wounded Officer James Hayes in the leg and fatally shot Sergeant Acri in the chest.
Sergeant Acri died on the scene. He was survived by his wife Rosalie, and his three children, Joann 17, Michelle 15, and Jimmy 7. Funeral services were held at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Woodbridge, Virginia. The Reverend R. Joseph Dooley, the Metropolitan Police Department Police and Fire Chaplin read a poem saying;
"We, unlike many will not forget, because today when our brother was laid to rest, a part of each of us was buried with him."
Sergeant Acri's remains were interred at his hometown of Hazelton, Pennsylvania.
Walter Hamrick, 47 years of age, who survived three gunshot wounds, was found guilty of Second Degree Murder while Armed in connection with the death of Sergeant Acri.
