Hubert James Foster, Sr., 91, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2017.
Graveside service: 10 a.m. Friday in Greenwood Memorial Park. Memorial service to follow at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Wesley Hall.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner Hospital for Children.
Hubert James Foster, Sr., was born Oct. 24, 1925, in San Antonio, the son of Hubert G. and Mildred McCrary Foster. His great-grandfather, Harry A. Foster's two story log house lies at the entrance of the Pioneer Village in Fort Worth. He was raised in San Antonio and graduated from Texas Military Institute in 1944. Upon graduation he served in the U.S. Army during World War II in France and Germany.
He attended Cornell University and the University of Texas and in 1948, he married Ada Henderson in Dallas and they were married for 67 years. In 1951, Hubert and Ada moved to Fort Worth and he worked for Trans American Life Insurance Company. They had three children, Shelley, Camille and Hubert, Jr.
Hubert was very civic minded and he was very devoted to the city of Fort Worth. It was his idea to outline the buildings in downtown Fort Worth with lights. He talked his father into outlining the Trans American Building in lights during the Christmas holidays and the rest of the buildings followed lighting their buildings for the holiday seasons. And to this day Fort Worth is lit up for the holidays.
Mr. Foster was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of Julian Feild Lodge 908 and the York Rite Commandery, Worth 19. He was a Moslah Shriner and a former member and past commander of Moslah Legion of Honor and of the Royal Order of Jesters Court 32. He was Commander of American Legion, Post 14, and served on the Board of the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery from its beginning. He volunteered for many veteran services and aided many programs for veterans. He was a life member of the V.F.W. post 8235, a director of The Navy League, former president of the Air Force Association member and past president of the Sons of the American Revolution, Van Zandt Chapter, member of the National Sojourners and the Heroes of 76.
Mr. Foster was a member of First United Methodist Church and a member of the Wesley Bible Class for 60 years.
Survivors: Three children, Shelley Daugherty and spouse, Jack, Camille Spoonts and spouse, Rick and Hubert J. Foster, Jr.; six grandchildren, Kelly Walsh and spouse, Eric, Jackie Green and spouse, John, Camille Pounds and spouse, Robert, Mason Spoonts, Whitney Spoonts and Holden Foster; and nine great-grandchildren, Reagan, Jack and Tom Walsh, Elise, Buck and Luke Pounds and Jacob, Jordan and Joel Foster Green.
