"G.W. SELBY Has been a resident of this county for 47 yrs. He came here with his parents from Lawrence County, Indiana where he was born September 14,1854. His father was A.J. and his mother Hester A. Selby. His father was wounded in the battle of Pittsburg Landing and died from the effects of his wounds in February of 1863. His mother died in 1883. He was educated at the common schools. He belonged to the Democratic Party all his life, and is a member of the United Brethren Church. He was married in 1882 to Miss Mary E. Downs, and to this union has been born two children, a girl Della, now eighteen years old, and a boy, William, now four years of age. He owns a farm of 55 acres, and in addition to this generally farms 100 acres more every year. He has served as Constable for some time in an efficient manner, and is one of Grove township's most highly respected citizens." Jasper County Biographies (ca. 1901). Note that the Battle of Pittsburg Landing is also known as the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee.
