Dick, a native of Olean, New York, was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1957. He chose naval aviation and was designated Naval Aviator in April 1959. After receiving a master's degree In aeronautical engineering in 1966 he served in Utility Squadron 10 at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Attack Squadron 86 at Oceana, VA. In 1967 he joined Attack Squadron VA164 aboard the aircraft carrier USS ORISKANY. In July of that year his A4D Skyhawk fell victim to anti-aircraft fire near Phu Ly, Nam Ha Province, North Vietnam. He ejected safely, but could not be rescued due to the hostile threat in the area. He was captured, and news reported he was a POW, but he was not among other POW's released in 1973. He died in captivity from unknown causes. His remains were returned in March of 1974.
