Obituary for Martha Evelyn Carmichael Swanson
Mrs. Martha Evelyn Carmichael Swanson, age 86, of 776 Park Avenue, Lindale, passed away on Friday evening, July 25, 2014, at a local healthcare facility.
Mrs. Swanson was born in Polk County, Georgia on February 28, 1928, daughter of the late Thomas Wesley Carmichael and the late Bessie Atkins Carmichael. She has been a member of the Park Avenue Baptist Church since 1953 where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years, sang in and directed the choir for many years and was active in the W.M.U. and the XYZ Club. Mrs. Swanson worked for a number of years in various stores as a clerk and also was a substitute teacher mostly at Midway which fulfilled her greatest desire to be a teacher.
Survivors include the love of her life and husband of 67 years, Arthur Swanson, to whom she was married on December 7, 1946; three sons, Roger Swanson, Lindale, Kenneth Swanson and his wife, Judy, Aragon, and Anthony Swanson and his wife, Terri, Waleska; five grandchildren, Terry Swanson, Eric Swanson, Kevin Swanson, Allison Hicks, and Jennifer Blakeney; eleven great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two brothers, Emory Carmichael, Kennesaw, and Bill Carmichael, Cedartown; a sister, Betty Jo Dempsey, Cedartown; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 28, 2014, at 11am in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Conway and the Rev. Wade Swanson officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Cedartown with Dr. James Guy officiating.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Sunday from 4 until 7pm. At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence.
Both active and honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Monday at 10:30am and include: Active: Terry Swanson, Eric Swanson, Kevin Swanson, Terry Hicks, Jr., Jason Blakeney, and Aaron Swanson. Honorary: Deacons of Park Avenue Baptist Church.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Park Avenue Baptist Church, P. O. Box 189, Lindale, GA 30147.
