Karl McCartney, 91, of North Baltimore passed away at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, June 4, 2017 at the Bridge Hospice Care Center in Bowling Green. He was born on May 19, 1926 to the late Grover and Sarah (Koons) McCartney. He married Jeanette Reichenbach on December 30, 1949 and she preceded him in death on May 4, 2016. He is survived by three sons, Alvin (Denise) McCartney; George (Rose) McCartney and Karl II (Deb) McCartney; four daughters: Alice Wilson; Reta (Jeff) Wingate; Tammy (Ted) Weyer and June (Bryan) VanAtta; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death a son Marvin McCartney and a grandson Eric VanAtta along with six brothers, Ody "Gerald"; Charles "Timer"; George; John Richard; Kenny and Joseph McCartney and five sisters, Reta Cramer, Blanche Dillinger-Book, Alice Belle, Margaret Reichenbach and Inez Anderson. He served his country proudly during WWII and the Korean War, active in the US Navy, earning two purple hearts for his service. While in the Navy he traveled the world but his favorite place was at home in North Baltimore, Ohio with his family. He was also a signalman for the Atlantic Fleet and a sailing instructor for the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Karl retired from the Budd Co. in North Baltimore where he also served as the UAW president. Karl was also a lifetime Detroit Tigers fan and an avid bowler. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at SMITH-CRATES FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Dan Young officiating. Burial will follow in New Maplewood Cemetery, North Baltimore. Visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or to the DAV in his memory.
