Moses Putnam Arnold died of disease at the Lynchburg hospital during the Civil War. He was in the 38th Georgia Regiment, Company E, along with many men from Oglethorpe County. He left behind a wife and six or seven surviving children.

Recent research has revealed that Moses Putnam Arnold was probably not a son of Chesley Arnold, a planter in Oglethorpe County, Georgia (though it is not impossible that he was). The father of Moses Putnam Arnold was probably Stephen Arnold, 1st cousin of Chesley and also a planter in Oglethorpe. However, that is also uncertain. Nevertheless, Stephen Arnoldand his wife Susannah (Arnold...cousin to Stephen) are more likely as the parents of Moses than Chesley Arnold and his wife Susannah (Andrews).

Note that researchers believe both Stephen and Chesley had a son called Moses. However, there are fairly strong indicators Chesley's son had no middle name.

There are no known documents proving who Moses' parents were. He is found on the Oglethorpe County, Georgia census for 1840, 1850, and 1860. The same documents indicate Moses was born in about 1810 or 1811.
