MRS. MARY SWETT, PIONEER IS DEAD
MARTINEZ, Nov. 8--Mrs. Mary L. Swett, widow of the late John Swett, pioneer educator of California, died last night at the home of her son, John French Swett, in the Alhambra valley, near Martinez. Mrs. Swett, who lacked one month of being 80 years old, has been suffering from some time, her health beginning to fail after the death of her husband in 1913. John Swett was one of the first principals and trustees in the San Francisco schools and the John Swett school was named in his honor. Mrs. Swett was prominent in San Francisco educational circles and was a graduate of the old Thompson Academy and the evening Normal school of San Francisco. She was vice-principal of the Model school and a regular teacher in the State Normal school of San Francisco. Mrs. Swett was the daughter of Judge Frederick P. Tracy, who drafted the platform on which Abraham Lincoln was elected to the presidency. Mrs. Swett is survived by three children, Frank Tracy Swett, president of the California Grape Growers' Protective Association and former member of the State Viticultural Commission; Mrs. Helen Swett Artieda of Oakland, and John French Swett, a fuit grower of the Alhambra valley. Mrs. Swett lived in San Francisco for more than thirty years and only in recent years made her home with her son on his ranch. She was prominent in the women suffrage movement and was a member of the Starr King church and Horatio Stebbins church. The funeral services will be held Monday morning from the John French Swett home, the body being brought to Oakland for cremation in the afternoon. [Oakland Tribune, Sat. Evening, 8 Nov 1919, pg. 4]
