Kathleen Anna Anklin Bishop, 80, a long-time Modoc County resident, died Oct. 3, 2002, at the Modoc medical Center in Alturas after a brief illness.

Services for Bishop will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Alturas.

She was born Sept. 18, 1922 in Alturas, the daughter of Richard and Lillie (Chambers) Anklin. The first of four daughters, she was raised on a ranch on the westside of Davis Creek.

She married Warren W. Welch, also of Davis Creek, on March 5, 1939. The couple had one daughter, Dixie. In 1943, Welch enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and served in the South Pacific until his death on Iwo Jima on March 9, 1945.

Bishop, who worked in the Bremerton shipyards in Washington while her husband was training there, returned to Davis Creek to help build the causeway across the south end of Goose Lake with several other women and men for Modoc County Road Department.

Bishop was proud that when a new dump truck was used, she had the seniority to be the one to drive it.

Bishop and her daughter then moved to Lakeview, where she worked for the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Later, she moved to Alturas to work for Drs. Phil and Paul McKinney.

She married C.M. Bishop of Willow Ranch on Feb. 25, 1947. The couple moved to their ranch at Davis Creek. They had two sons, Bill and Frank. She loved the ranch. Her garden, flowers, chickens and berry patch were all a source of joy.

After selling the ranch, Bishop managed cattle for several area ranchers. Bishop provided meals and a genuine hospitality for many cowboys over the years.

Bishop is survived by her husband, C.M. Bishop; daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and Duane McGarva of Likely; sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Robin Bishop of Bakersfield, Calif., and Frank and Lee Bishop of Reno; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Snider Murrah, of Concord, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Warren; sisters Evelyn Bratton and Maudie Ward; and stepsister, Bea Kelly.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Davis Creek 4-H Club, Box 108, Davis Creek, CA 96108, or to Modoc Medical Center's acute care equipment fund, 228 McDowell St., Alturas, CA 96101.
